WAMDSAD, the Maidenhead based sports
club for the disabled, have celebrated another successful
year in sport and endeavour with their 2009 Awards Dinner
held at their Braywick Clubhouse. Excellent in competition
from beginner level to National and International success,
was rewarded as much as those who help through their
volunteering commitment to make this unique organisation
a noted centre of excellence for disability sport.
Honoured guests for the evening were the Deputy Mayor
of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Councillor
Mrs Catherine Bursnall and her consort Cllr Tom Bursnall,
Mrs Tamra Booth, Shanly Group, Ms Sue Kidd Assistant
Head Teacher, Newlands Girls school and Martin McElhatton,
Chief Executive from WheelPower.
Vivienne Davies, Director and Chairman of the WAMDSAD
Sports Committee, ably assisted by Nick Gibbs, Sports
Manager of the club, presided over the proceeding and
the presentation of a wide range of cups, shields and
certificates to the deserving members. Other than the
awards for all the different sports that WAMDSAD provides
– see the recipient list below – the attention
is always on those who receive special awards. Amongst
those who received a 2009 Award were:
• Sam Richardson, club member
with the most general endeavour throughout the year;
• the Ruel family for the family who have most
supported the club throughout the year;
• Rebecca Gale for fundraising excellence;
• Tia Ruel for best junior member; and
• Helen Johnson who was awarded the Giles Wallage
Trophy as the disabled person who best helps other disabled
members.
The top award of the year, the Wilkinson Sword, for
the club member who has excelled in the highest level
of competitive sport during the year, went to Georgina
Callingham for her outstanding performance in air weapons
shooting both here and abroad.
Finally a new award, the Presidents Cup, presented
by WAMDSAD president John Jenkins himself, was awarded
to Mick Mitcham, a longstanding member who has provided
excellent service to the club over a number of years.
A memorable evening once more, as the club looks forward
