Wamdsad 24th Annual Games

The 24th Annual Games sponsored by Michael Shanly were held at the clubhouse on Braywick Sports Ground on Saturday 2 June.

On a gloriously sunny day, over 100 competitors from 8 clubs turned up to compete in a variety of sports and games ranging from highly disciplined events such as archery and air weapons, track and field events such as shot, javelin and discus, which challenged each competitor to aim for a personal best and the ever popular events including Draughts and Shove Ha’penny.

This year, with the extension to the clubhouse complete, Table Tennis was added to the games on offer and other events such as Skittles, Target Basketball, Target New Age Kurling and Petanque ensured that none of the competitors had time to be bored! The clubs who attended were Gosport, Southend, Rushmoor Mallards from Farnborough, MSE Phoenix from Chalfont, WADSAD from Wycombe, a new team comprising mainly junior competitors – Team Colours UK and of course WAMDSAD.

With the support of a wonderful team of volunteers, who started setting up the venue at 8am everything was in place for when the clubs started to arrive and indeed some of the events were underway before our official start time of 10am. The highest number of entries was 88 in the Skittles. However, 80 competitors in Target Basketball, Pentanque and Targte New Age Kurling as well as 70 competitors in the main field events kept the helpers very busy.

The girls from Newlands Girls School, under the guidance of Mrs E MacBean, come every year to help out by running all the track and field events, plus other events when needed and their enthusiasm and encouragement contributed greatly to the enjoyment of all those competing.

At the end of the day, after collating all the results, we awarded almost 200 medals and 2 trophies. The first of the trophies went to the club who scored most points in all track and field events. This was a closely fought battle with last years runners up with Rushmoor Mallards coming out on top, closely followed by WAMDSAD and Team Colours UK.

The second trophy was awarded to the club with the highest number of points overall and once again, for the 9th consecutive year, WAMDSAD were victorious with a magnificent 63 points. Rushmoor Mallards finished second with 61 points and third place went to Team Colours UK with 48 points. WAMDSAD’s victory was ensured by the 23 competitors, who between them collected 49 medals. In the junior section Lucie Bouron won a magnificent 9 medals (2 gold, 7 silver), closely followed by Anthony Hornby who repeated his achievement of last year by winning 6 medals (1 gold, 5 silver) and Georgina Callingham who won 4 medals (2 gold, 2 silver). In the senior section, top spot for medals won was a tie between Richard Barton who achieved 6 medals (2 gold, 4 silver) and Cheryl Kelley (3 gold, 3 silver).

So, after another successful day for everyone who took part, the organizing committee are already planning next year’s event, which will see the 25th celebration of WAMDSAD Games.
