Wamdsad
Wheelchair Push 2007
It’s
not often you get to see a Priest, a clown and a bishop
walking along the A4 to Slough. But when it comes to our
Annual Wheelchair Push, which took place on Saturday 14
July, it’s the least that can be expected.
Loads of people turned out for this year’s
event, which involves teams pushing our disabled members
in wheelchairs from the clubhouse to Slough, Eton, Windsor
and then back again to the clubhouse here in Maidenhead.
The event, with about 15 teams involved,
raised over £12,000 on
the
day and we are aiming to use the money to help
provide sports for disabled people at WAMDSAD.
This year the Push included a monk, a pharaoh,
doctors and nurses, some Hawaiian Hoola girls and Lara Croft
came too.
John Jenkins said “It’s a big
community event, and people come from all over the country
to participate. There’s an opportunity to dress up
in fancy dress, and you can fun while raising money for
WAMDSAD for disabled people to do sport.”
John
commented that thousands of miles have been walked since
1977, and that this had led to hundreds of thousands of
pounds being donated over the years.
Ron Butler who was part of the Maidenhead
Rugby Club team, whose theme for the day was ‘tarts
and vicars’ said, “It’s a good opportunity
for pre-season training and we’re making money for
a worthwhile cause.”
The Thames Valley HOGS came along at the
start with 7 Harley Davidson bikes, and presented John Jenkins
with a cheque which came from money raised during their
usual monthly meetings that take place at WAMDSAD and is
an association that goes back a long way.
Hopefully the funds raised on the day
will be boosted by sponsorship that will be collected by
teams after the day.
WAMDSAD would like to thank all the teams who took part
for their wonderful effort and hope that next year’s
push will be bigger and better that ever.
Next year’s Push will take
place on Saturday 12 July 2008 – put the date in your
diaries!!!
