New Age Kurling

Is similar to traditional kurling on ice, but played on a smooth surface with a target laid on the floor at one end. Each player has 2 weighted discs with ball bearings underneath which they roll to reach the target. No experience required! Lots of fun and suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

**WORLD KURLING TROPHY RETURNS TO MAIDENHEAD**

On 3rd & 4th May ten members of Windsor, Ascot, Maidenhead District Sports Association for the Disabled (WAMDSAD) took part in the third New Age Kurling World Championships.

New Age Kurling is essentially the same as the Winter Olympic sport of Curling, but is played on a hard wooden surface with plastic stones rather than on ice with granite stones.

This year’s competition was held at Warner’s Lakeside Resort, Hayling Island with over 100 people participating.

In the Pairs competition Gill & Nick Gibbs were the number one seeds, as defending champions, with their International team mates, Chris & Vivienne Davies, seeded at number three. Having made it through the round robin stage Nick & Gill went out of the competition during the first knock out round, with Steve & Janet Jeffery also of WAMDSAD falling at the next hurdle. Vivienne & Chris, however, continued to progress through the knockout stages and beat Roy Holloway and Arthur Jeffreys from Basingstoke (8-2) in the semi finals. They then met Alan Gregson & Bob Jackson, the number four seeds, from Wear Sport for All in the final. Here Vivienne & Chris’s International experience came to the fore as they notched up a 6-0 lead after 4 ends. Alan and Bob then put their nerves behind them to win the next 2 ends but Vivienne & Chris maintained their cool to win the final end and the World Title by a final score of 7-2.
Special praise must go to Vivienne for ably assisting Nick in running and co-ordinating the two day event as well as competing in both competitions.

Chris, Gill, Nick & Vivienne’s next challenge is to defend their Nations Cup Title for the third time at the sports only International competition in October.

In the Singles competition WAMDSAD provided four of the top six seeds and nine out of ten of the WAMDSAD contingent made it through from the round robin stage into the knock out tournament.

Only Gill, Nick & David Brown made it through to the second round where Nick exited the competition. David made it through to the Quarter Finals before being beaten in a hard fought battle by Gill (6-3). Gill then lost her Semi Final (2-6) to Tom Stubbs from Fishburn, the eventual World Champion. Having finished as runner-up in 2006 Gill was determined not to come away from the Championships without a trophy and win the playoff for third place. In a very close match against Bob Jackson, decided in the final end, Gill came out the eventual winner 5-4 to claim her third World Championship trophy.

To put the WAMDSAD achievements into perspective, the club were the only one to win two trophies over the weekend and WAMDSAD members have won every Pairs World Championships.
